Ukraine in a Changing Global Landscape: Junior Diplomatic Academy Students in Conversation with Volodymyr Yurchenko

May 27, 2026

As the academic year drew to a close, students of the Junior Diplomatic Academy had the opportunity to meet with Volodymyr Yurchenko—a serviceman, public leader, international relations expert, and specialist in diplomatic protocol and crisis management. As Chairman of the Youth Council under Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture, Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Alliance, and a member of the Board of the Ukrainian Association of Foreign Policy, he brings together experience from the fields of security, diplomacy, and civic engagement. His lecture, “The Role and Place of Ukraine in the New World Order: A Leadership Strategy,” sparked an engaging conversation about Ukraine’s future and the evolving international environment.

The discussion began with an examination of the major global trends shaping contemporary international relations. Students explored the geopolitical dynamics of the Americas, Europe, and Asia, gaining insight into the strategic interests of different states and considering how these developments influence Ukraine’s role and opportunities on the global stage.

A significant part of the discussion focused on the transformation of the international system over time. Students revisited the bipolar world order that emerged after the Second World War, when global affairs were largely defined by competition between two major power centers. They also explored the growing shift toward a more multipolar world, a trend that has become increasingly visible since 2014. Together, participants considered how these changes are reshaping international relations and what new opportunities and challenges they present for Ukraine.

The central theme of the meeting was whether Ukraine can not only respond to events but also influence their course. The discussion went far beyond theoretical models. It focused on the responsibility of the state, the importance of strategic thinking, the role of the younger generation in shaping the country’s future, and the need to view Ukraine as an active participant in international processes.

Students engaged enthusiastically in the discussion, posing thoughtful questions and exploring the challenges of today’s geopolitical landscape. By combining academic knowledge, civic engagement, and practical insights into international affairs, the lecture became much more than an educational experience. It encouraged participants to think critically about Ukraine’s place in the world and to reflect on the role they themselves may play in shaping the country’s future.
