Art That Connects Cultures: Junior Diplomatic Academy Students Attend the “Japanese Autumn” Festival

September 6, 2026

Students of the Junior Diplomatic Academy of the Kyiv Palace of Children and Youth attended the “Japanese Autumn” Cultural Festival, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Ukrainian-Japanese Center. For several hours, the festival became a space where young people could immerse themselves in the traditions, arts, and values of a country whose culture has inspired admiration and interest around the world for decades.

For aspiring diplomats, events like this provide a valuable opportunity to see how culture helps people find common ground, even when they are separated by thousands of kilometers. Understanding another country begins not only with facts and historical events, but also with learning how its people live, what inspires them, and the meanings they attach to their traditions.

During the festival, the students immersed themselves in the world of Japanese art and philosophy through Mark Edward Harris’s photo exhibition, “On Hot Springs: A Path to Cleansing Body and Soul.” The photographs revealed not only the beauty of the Japanese autumn landscape, but also the deep appreciation for harmony, tranquility, and inner balance that lies at the heart of Japanese culture.

Equally engaging were the hands-on cultural activities. Participants observed a traditional tea ceremony, explored the art of calligraphy, and learned the basics of origami. Each of these traditions offered insight into how aesthetics, respect for others, and attention to detail are woven into everyday life in Japan.

Particular interest was sparked by the exhibits highlighting Japan’s support for Ukraine. They encouraged students to reflect on how international cooperation extends far beyond official negotiations and continues through cultural, humanitarian, and educational initiatives that bring people and nations closer together.

As they returned home, the participants carried with them not only new knowledge about Japan, but also a deeper understanding that genuine dialogue between countries begins with curiosity, openness, and a willingness to learn from one another. Experiences like these serve as a reminder that culture remains one of the most subtle and at the same time, one of the most powerful tools for fostering mutual understanding in our world.
