Participants of the Junior Diplomatic Academy embarked on a cultural visit to the Saint Sophia of Kyiv National Reserve, exploring Ukraine’s rich historical and cultural heritage and gaining a deeper understanding of landmarks with profound spiritual and national importance.

On the tour, Junior Diplomatic Academy students explored Saint Sophia Cathedral, one of Kyiv’s oldest architectural treasures dating back to the Kyivan Rus era. They discovered its historical significance as a religious, educational, and cultural hub, and admired the cathedral’s remarkable 11th-century mosaics and frescoes.

Beyond the architectural and historical highlights, Junior Diplomatic Academy students also visited “The Wonderful World of Olga Rapay,” an exhibition showcasing the artwork of KPDU’s Visual Arts Department students, held within the National Sanctuary grounds.

St. Sophia Cathedral stands as both a historic treasure and a symbol of contemporary Ukrainian statehood. Today, it hosts the ceremonial presentation of credentials by foreign ambassadors starting their diplomatic missions in Ukraine, highlighting its unique role as a space where Ukraine’s rich history meets its modern diplomatic life.

A highlight of the visit was the Metropolitan’s House, an 18th-century architectural landmark that once housed the city’s spiritual leaders. Students explored its interiors, learned the function of each room, and discovered how metropolitans historically shaped both the city and the church.

Rita Kosyak, director of the Junior Diplomatic Academy, emphasized that exploring cultural landmarks helps students not only expand their knowledge but also cultivate a mindful appreciation of Ukraine’s history and heritage.
