“Spring of Unity”: the Junior Diplomatic Academy hosted an open art lecture on the traditions of peoples around the world

March 18, 2026

On March 18, an open art lecture by the Junior Diplomatic Academy students, titled “Welcoming Spring in the Traditions of the Peoples of the World: Spring of Unity”, took place at the Kyiv Palace of Children and Youth – an event that brought together art, culture, and diplomacy in a single space.

Among the guests were representatives of the diplomatic and international community, including Parviz Asadov, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Ukraine, and Mary K Leonard, President of the International Women’s Club of Kyiv (IWCK).

Rita Kosyak, Deputy Director of the Kyiv Palace of Children and Youth and leader of the Junior Diplomatic Academy project, welcomed the participants, highlighting that events like this help build a culture of understanding between nations. Lecturer and organizer David Sureshwar added that art lectures offer more than knowledge—they let you live the culture firsthand.

The program turned into a fascinating world journey. Participants witnessed Ukraine’s spring traditions with Masnytsia and spring songs, enjoyed a live performance by the band “OM,” and explored the customs of other countries.

The European aspect of the program came alive with Polish traditions presented by the ensemble “Polyany from the Dnipro,” while the Caucasus and Eastern countries shone through Nowruz, the spring renewal festival connecting generations. The attendance of international guests added a meaningful touch—they were not just spectators but participants in this cultural exchange.

Through music and dance, audiences journeyed to Turkey, Spain, France, India, and Korea. Standout performances included Honored Artist of Ukraine Olena Grebenyuk, Serafima Shikhaliyeva, the “Smile of the Sun” ensemble, and the Ukrainian-Spanish “School of Flamenco” center. Each culture spoke in its own unique way, yet all shared a single message: life reborn, hope renewed, and unity celebrated.

The program’s grand finale featured Nataliya Makovetska performing “Soul – it is a tender lily of the valley,” accompanied by an Indian dance improvisation by David Sureshwar—a beautiful symbol of different cultures coming together in one artistic expression.

Hosts Ulyana and Illia Hryhorenko wove the program’s elements into a seamless narrative, fostering a sense of warmth and shared experience.

The art lecture “Spring of Unity” became more than an artistic showcase; it demonstrated how culture can act as a language of diplomacy, connecting nations through traditions, music, and common values. For the Junior Diplomatic Academy participants, it was a chance not only to celebrate spring but also to explore and appreciate the world’s diverse cultures.
