The art of negotiation: how future diplomats develop their negotiation skills

April 2, 2026

At the Junior Diplomatic Academy, students attended a session on negotiation skills led by Oleh Demchyk, President of the Professional Negotiators Club. The discussion focused on the core principles of preparation for both diplomatic and business negotiations, highlighting that success is built well before the conversation begins.

Participants explored the importance of thoroughly understanding the other side—their values, interests, and openness to compromise. A carefully prepared “dossier” enables negotiators to anticipate outcomes and identify the most effective strategies.

The session also highlighted the importance of analytical preparation—mapping out possible scenarios and assessing risks to stay confident even in challenging situations. A key practical tool was SMART goal-setting—clear, measurable, and time-bound objectives. The speaker recommended thinking in ranges, from ideal to minimum outcomes, to remain flexible during negotiations.

Another central concept was BATNA—the best alternative to a negotiated agreement. As the speaker noted, “Once you know you have other options, you become immune to manipulation.” Having a strong alternative builds confidence, eases pressure, and reinforces your position at the negotiating table.

Participants also explored the concept of a “worldview”—how each side interprets reality through its own perspective. Recognizing this helps better understand others’ behavior and find common ground, even in complex negotiations.

Rita Kosyak, Head of the Project Office at the Kyiv Palace of Children and Youth, noted:

“Negotiation is not about conflict—it is the art of understanding. Meetings like this equip future diplomats with tools that help them do more than just talk—they help them achieve results. In a world where every decision matters, the ability to negotiate is one of the most powerful skills a person can have. We are truly grateful to Oleh Demchyk for such an insightful and valuable session!”
