The Junior Diplomatic Academy visiting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine

April 16, 2026

Participants of the Junior Diplomatic Academy had the privilege of visiting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and engaging directly with the people who represent the country’s interests on the global stage. From the very first moments, the building created a distinct impression—reserved on the outside, yet filled with meaning and the events that shape Ukraine’s international image.

The visit was shaped by a meeting with Olena Yalova, Director of the State Protocol Department. Through an engaging and personal conversation—blending official insights with real-life experience—participants explored the inner workings of the ministry, from the halls of international negotiations and credential ceremonies to the corridors where every detail carries its own story.

One of the most memorable highlights was an interactive mural featuring a bird that comes alive to the sounds of “Shchedryk,” symbolizing the connection between tradition and modernity. The military technology exhibit offered a different perspective, showing how diplomacy and security operate side by side, strengthening one another. Equally impactful were the spaces dedicated to shaping the country’s public image—from halls hosting foreign delegations to carefully curated protocol details and artworks that influence how Ukraine is perceived worldwide. Replicas of lost or damaged Ukrainian artworks quietly reminded visitors of the value of cultural heritage—and the determination to preserve and restore it.

The visit concluded with a discussion in the conference hall, where participants learned about the ministry’s structure and the real-life paths of diplomats. They explored how the profession evolves, adapts to new challenges, and functions beyond theory. In that moment, it became clear: diplomacy is not an abstract system, but people—individuals who make decisions every day and carry responsibility for them.

As the visit came to a close, there was a quiet but strong sense that this experience went far beyond a single day. It pointed toward a path that is becoming clearer and more tangible, reinforcing for Junior Diplomatic Academy participants their confidence in choosing a future in diplomacy.

Sincere thanks go to Olena Yalova and the team of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine for their openness, attention to detail, and willingness to share not just knowledge, but real diplomatic experience. Encounters like this build trust, inspire, and remind us that every diplomatic journey begins with dialogue.

First impressions

“Today, at just 16, I experienced something that even professionals at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs aspire to.

Together with the Junior Diplomatic Academy, I visited Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From the very start, we had the privilege of meeting the Director of the State Protocol Department and her team, who introduced us to a unique mural featuring a bird that comes to life with the melody of “Shchedryk.”

Walking into the ministry’s grand building, I was struck by its scale and elegance. During the tour, we explored an exhibition of military technology—drones, missiles, and more—and learned how Ukraine protects itself today. It was a powerful realization of what stands behind the safety of our skies.

One of the most memorable highlights was the “Vampire” drone, as well as a specialized vehicle designed to safely deliver people and supplies to combat zones, reducing risks to human life.

We also visited official halls where distinguished guests are received, including one used for credential ceremonies. A particularly moving moment was seeing replicas of artworks by Ukrainian artists whose originals were lost during the tragedy at the Kherson Hydroelectric Power Plant. Among them, Leonid Chychkan’s “Evening in the Carpathians” left a lasting impression. It’s inspiring that these replicas are available for purchase, allowing people to carry a piece of Ukrainian culture with them.

The visit concluded in a large conference hall, where we had the chance to ask questions, present the Junior Diplomatic Academy, and see the behind-the-scenes elements of diplomatic protocol—gifts, invitations, and ceremonial details that quietly shape Ukraine’s image worldwide.

The entire experience was deeply inspiring and filled with a sense of purpose. It strengthened my motivation to grow and one day reach the level of working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

I’m truly grateful to Ms. Olena, her team, and the Junior Diplomatic Academy for this incredible opportunity. This day didn’t just inspire me—it clarified my path forward 💙💛”

“Today’s visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs went far beyond my expectations. Instead of a formal tour, we had an open and meaningful conversation with professionals who represent and protect our country’s interests. What stood out most was the openness of Olena Yalova and her team—they welcomed us not just as visitors, but as future colleagues, sharing insights from everything from the story behind the iconic ‘bird’ at the entrance to the realities of working in rooms where important decisions are made every day. It was incredibly valuable to see diplomacy in action and to realize that what we learn at the Academy truly applies in real life. This experience will stay with me for a long time, and it has made me even more excited for the upcoming lecture on state protocol.”

Today we got a real sense of what it’s like to work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We learned about the history of the building and the spaces where negotiations are held. It was especially engaging to hear the representatives speak—they answered our questions clearly and in depth, and their international experience was particularly fascinating. Huge thanks to everyone who made this visit possible!
